I think it's pas lilac season. They only bloom once a year and for a very short time.Anyone know how ot get lilacs to bloom,i am doig na project and this is driving me mad..?
Lilacs form their flower buds made by mid summer, the previous year. So if you pruned after that point, you may have cut off all the buds. Also the lilacs must have enough stored carbohydrates before they will set flower buds. If the plant was under stress last year prior to bud formation, say from exceissive pruning either in 2006 or early 2007, then the plant did not have enough store energy to make the flower buds. Finally winter care is important. Lilacs will tolerate quite cold temperatures but will not tolerate winter drying. If you had a dry winter and did not water, the buds may have died. The flower bud will be in the terminal bud, to most bud on the stems.....is it missing?
